AOP Fronton / AOP Saint-Sardos

Meeting with Benjamin PiccoliManager, Maison des vins Fronton

In a few words and figures, the Fronton vineyard is… ?

The Fronton vineyard is first and foremost the Négrette, a grape variety unique in the world! It’s also about 7 million bottles a year of red, white and rosé wine, produced by 40 winegrowers and a cooperative cellar.

The vineyard’s motto would be?
Fronton, the wine of the Toulousans! Our vineyards are less than 20 km from the Place du Capitole!

Your best vineyard experiences?
A ride in a 2CV followed by a tasting at Domaine Roumagnac, a dinner in the dark at Château Boujac, a tasting of top-of-the-range vintages at Château Bouissel or an exceptional visit to Château Saint-Louis, not forgetting a night in the tepee at Château de Belaygues after a bike ride along the canal…

What can I expect when I come to the Maison des Vins?
The Maison des Vins is the starting point for discovering the vineyards. Before visiting the estates, Paul will introduce you to the appellation and suggest you taste some typical vintages. You can buy bottles, learn about the terroir and even visit an exhibition of paintings and sculptures.

A little cooking advice?
I love scallops just snacked, a little fleur de sel, a turn of the pepper mill and a glass of Fronton rosé. Simple but effective!

A look at the neighboring vineyards: what do you recommend doing in the AOP Saint-Sardos vineyards?
I like Saint-Sardos reds for their fruitiness and character: the Tannat-Syrah blend works well, the former bringing strength and fruitiness, the latter spice and sunshine!
“I also like to take part in the wine festival at the beginning of August; it’s a very convivial event, where you can hunt for bargains at the garage sale before tasting with the winemakers.

Meeting with Julie BiennesCommunications Manager, Cave de Saint-Sardos

In two words and a few figures, the Saint-Sardos vineyard is… ?

A heritage of over 1000 years of history, linked to the renown of the Grandselve abbey. The Saint-Sardos PDO is the only vineyard in France to combine Syrah and Tannat in its blend. In a few figures: Obtained AOC: 2011 /130 hectares in AOP Saint-Sardos / 2 main grape varieties: Syrah/Tannat / 1 independent winemaker and 1 winery (30 winemakers) / 3 colors (red, rosé, white)

The vineyard’s motto would be?
The originality of a unique marriage!

Your best vineyard experiences?
A trip between vineyards and lakes on an electric scooter to discover the nuggets of the village. An oenological experience to discover the secrets of blending in a fun workshop where you blend YOUR own cuvée! And there’s also a fun walk to discover the heritage of Saint-Sardos, in the form of an investigation to be solved.

If I come to the Saint-Sardos AOC, what can I expect?
A warm welcome, tastings and personalized advice.

A little cooking advice?
Duck confit goes perfectly with Saint-Sardos red wines! For an evening of wine and cheese, you’ll be seduced by the diversity of our dry white wines.

A look at our neighboring vineyards: what do you recommend doing in the AOP Fronton vineyards?
Les buissonnières, an intimate event offering a privileged encounter with the winemaker during a convivial evening. And don’t forget the AOP Fronton flagship event “Saveurs et Senteurs”, a not-to-be-missed opportunity to meet the Fronton winemakers and taste their best vintages.
